"Every exit is an entry somewhere else." *

My grandmother left us early this morning. This is the only drawing I have from her while she was signing a book for me. That was a ritual we had. Every year she was giving us some money which had to be spent on buying books only!! We then had to take the books to her to have her signature on the first page. She always had a well-prepared text for each of us. Her handwriting was beautiful and she knew it !

The book in the picture was my gift when I decided to study animation in 2003.
Today in 2010, I'm finishing an animation film. The main character is a grandmother who is not alive and his grandson decides to take the last visit to her apartment before her children move everything out and he remembers one of the most memorable moments he had with her.

She wanted us to study and learn as much as we could. I don't know why , but she seemed to be very very happy that I've chosen animation although she wrote to me in a letter that she preferred me to study computer engineering instead.

But the greatest lesson she left behind for me was the way she used to eat.
"There is no limit for the type of food you take .You can eat everything you want as long as you know when to stop!"

Note.

I wrote this note two days ago,but I didn't publish it .The same night, in my dream ,I cut my breasts myself and I sew them again on my body. I think I wasn't happy with the way they were before .The result was a hideous piece of meat sticking to me. In my dream I was talking to my mom and a friend of mine about it and they seemed to be very relax, as if nothing has happened .Obviously, I woke up !!

Here is what I wrote before I sleep:

4 years ago ,after experiencing a mental crash!, I finally accepted that there are sometimes some limits I'd better keep. Somebody told me afterwards that it happens for everyone when they pass 25; when they stop dreaming about their life by accepting the reality. I accepted this justification right away as it seemed really beautiful.

Now ,approaching my third decade of life,I'm recovering from a physical crash. I easily passed about 5 months of last year dealing with pain and weired physical symptoms. I'm gradually receiving the news from my Dr. s .Good news which are telling me that the problems are mechanical ! and that there has been a problem but they can`t find the reason. I'm extremely happy that I can walk and sit down again :)

but...

I don't want to believe that I'm changing. I hate feeling that these phases are the turning points in my life. I hate loosing my free spirit.
I don't want the time to go back but I want myself to change back to who I was in August 2005.

Age group: 2-5 years old

Last weekend I saw ''Jacque and the beanstalk'' ; a version for young people between 2-5.
The whole show lasted about 35-40 minutes. Everything was magic there ; a tiny space which is used by it's 5 dimensions and a narration that had no ups and downs. The whole story was being told by a storyteller who was giving and imaginry life to a puppet she found in her garden. The puppet in this story easily stole a hen that laid golden eggs , a golden harp and a piece of gold from the castle of the Giant. As easy as that.No trace of the giant and his wife.

The last third of the show was about ''how to plant a bean?'' ! Everyone recieved a bean and the instructions to follow. Adults were warned not to let any child alone with the beanstalk. The whole show wasn't about anything good or bad.It was about feeling a moment of magic.

Some pages to share

A very interesting website about TEHRAN, IRAN in French. It is electronically published in Tehran:

Another interesting website, If you're looking for articles in English:

and finally a weblog about the 60s in Iran. I'm not sure about the credibility of the contents but the blogger is a very good writer, and a fantastic narrator. It is in Persian indeed.

Puppet festival (1)

Last night I've seen a puppet show of Laura Heit. Her show was a collection of several short stories , each of them less than 3 minutes (most of them about 1 minute) . The puppets were as small as a matchbox. Great sense of timing and suspense made her simple stories sweet, unpredictable and entertaining. She is an animation film maker as well.

here is the link to her website:

Enjoy it.

Autour d'une table (Around a table)

I celebrated my high school graduation with 4 other friends. We took a taxi from the school and we went to see a fortune teller. That was my first experience. Why, how ? and so many other questions that remained unanswered for me at that time.
I'm working on an animation since the last 6 months. It is inspired by this memory from 12 years ago. I tried to find people with the same experience. I thought this theme is considered to be very banal but I want to know more about it and the only way is to go , see and talk with whoever has ever done it. As usual , human beings turned out to be much more unknown than I could imagine. First of all it was very hard to find people who had that experience and who were eager to talk about it. It took me a long time to organize the script. But the interviews are done now, the interior set is ready and I'm shooting. I have a lot to animate and the latest version of the laica reel is 11 minutes. I need to finish the film by the end of July 2010.

It's my first independent animation film after my graduation. I spent a third of my time finding budget for the film which was successful for a big part of it but..... I'm still looking for a post-production collaborator, a musician and eventually a distributer.
